Feel Better with Acupuncture!

Frequently asked Questions

Acupuncture began as a Traditional Chinese Medicine practice. It involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. These points once activated will stimulate healing and promote well-being. This happens through the release of endorphins (“feel good” chemicals) and by stimulating blood flow.

Traditionally, Acupuncture is believed to balance the flow of energy in the body. It does this through managing “Qi” or energy, through pathways in the body. These pathways are called Meridians, in Traditional Acupuncture Theory. Acupuncture works by inserting needles into specific points along the Meridians.

Conventionally, Acupuncture releases chemicals called endorphins in your body that make it feel good. It also activates your blood flow and helps heal the body. Science finds that Acupuncture is linked to certain nervous system in the body. Research into modern acupuncture is constantly finding newer linkages to how this ancient art ties to modern healthcare.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Avoid eating a heavy meal or drinking caffeine right before your session. Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol or intense physical activity before your visit.

Look for a licensed and certified acupuncturist with good reviews and recommendations. In Ontario, they need to be a Registered Acupuncturist (R.Ac). The governing body for acupuncturists in Ontario is the CTCMPAO. The acupuncturist’s background in healthcare and knowledge of anatomy is especially important. The efficacy of treatments relies a lot on the expertise of the acupuncturist.

At Tranquilo, Mrs. K. Vasanthakumar, R. Ac., brings over 30 years of acupuncture experience. Some of this experience is international (Sri Lanka, Australia, UAE). She is also a licensed doctor from Sri Lanka (MD – Sri Lanka). She combines her knowledge of both modern medicine and traditional acupuncture. This results in a very unique and effective acupuncture treatment plan.

Please avoid seeking treatment unlicensed acupuncturists. You can search for their registration on the CTCMPAO’s database. Please ensure their certification is up to date.

Other healthcare practitioners can use Acupuncture as a modality. In Ontario, this generally includes physiotherapists and chiropractors. You can search for their registration on:

  • For Physios: the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario’s database
  • For Chiros: the College of Chiropractors of Ontario’s database

Please be meticulous in your review and screening of acupuncture practitioners.

Initial sessions typically last about 45-60 minutes, including the consultation. Follow-up sessions are usually around 30-45 minutes.
